The city is located in the east of the country and crossed by the Danube (Donau). Capital of the Duchy and then Archduke of Austria, it was in fact that of the Germanic world during the reign of the house of Habsburg (became in 1745 the house of Habsburg-Lorraine) on the Holy Roman Empire (1273-1291, 1298- 1308, 1438-1806) then presided over the Germanic Confederation (1815-1866).
